Museum

The Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow /MAMM/ founded by the Moscow Government in 1996 was the first museum of contemporary art and photography in Russia. The director of MAMM is Olga Sviblova.

In 2010, after reconstruction and restoration, the museum received a new building at Ostozhenka, 16. Today it is the most beautiful and most up-to-date exhibition space in the city. It’s no coincidence that many call MAMM a mini-Guggenheim: the facilities include 7 floors, spacious exhibition halls, an interconnecting constructivist staircase and a glazed elevator beloved by both adults and children, ultra-modern lighting and dynamic minimalistic architecture.

The museum collection is comprised of more than 180 thousand exhibits. There is no permanent exhibition at the museum. Exhibition projects are constantly changing. MAMM shows the history of foreign and domestic contemporary art, with projects by luminaries of Russian and world photography, as well as exhibitions from young artists, video art, VR, art related to new technologies, performances, and other types or genres of art. At Ostozhenka, 16 MAMM implements some 60 exhibitions annually.  

Apart from exhibitions, the museum hosts various educational programmes for children and adults related to the practice and theory of art. Stars of world art conduct lectures and give master classes at MAMM. Such programmes as MAMMcinema, MAMMusic and MAMMdiscussion are presented at MAMM on a regular basis.

MAMM is one of the most visited museums not only in Moscow, but in Russia as a whole. More than 70% of our viewers are young people aged from 17 to 35.

MAMM founded and holds every spring two major international festivals: the Photobiennale (since 1996) and the Biennale of Fashion and Style in Photography (since 1999). These MAMM biennales and photography exhibitions have turned Moscow into one of the capitals of world photography.

In December 2021, as part of celebrations for MAMM’s 25th anniversary, the museum organised a new international biennale, Art for the Future, demonstrating art projects based on the latest Industry 4.0 technologies (neural networks, robotics, 3D animation, virtual and augmented reality).

MAMM has been implementing one of its strategic programmes, The History of Russia in Photographs, since 1997. In 2016 the portal russiainphoto.ru appeared. Annual attendance numbers almost 3 million users.

A structural subdivision of the museum is the A. Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia. In Paris in 2018 the school received a high-ranking award as Best Art Institute in the field of art education in Central and Eastern Europe. Graduates and students of the Rodchenko School become laureates of major Russian and foreign awards in the sphere of art, and to a large extent form the landscape of new Russian contemporary art.
