Video and movie program

Is it contemporary art which is revealed to be deeply affected by the cinematographic language or is it the cinema which looks to contemporary art for another way of dealing with images, another time factor appropriate for moving images? Thus, the images chosen for this programme demonstrate both the correspondence between the arts, the limits of the territory of video and the relational practices of contemporary art and cinema. As regards this collection, Le Fresnoy shows itself with what has been produced there. This selection comes from a paradox. It certainly doesn’t reflect the entire collection. These are individual works. The coherence of the selection of works is to be found elsewhere.

The programme looks like this:
A young woman climbs a never-ending staircase. A close up of a face moves up and down the screen. Faces attest to the Chechen genocide. A young woman is lured into a Parisian apartment. Three characters recount their stories of an overpopulated beach in Copacabana. Two voices seem to float in the night on the rooves of Roubaix. The Brazilan Sertão represents both an imaginary and real place. A young woman wakes up, sounds are amplified like in a bad dream, etc.

This selection offers surprising projections full of repercussions — an exciting variety of work proposed by the young artists and the guest professors at the Fresnoy.
