Returning to a tradition first initiated by the Department of Fine Arts in 1851, the French Culture Ministry has decided to continue their policy of national photographic campaigns by commissioning some 40 photographers to create projects on the theme of youth.
Aware that artists are keen to use various types of photography and interested in the plasticity of form expressed in their oeuvre, the Culture Ministry has asked these photographers to produce a visible testimony of France’s cultural diversity. The new France is composed of historical roots, memories, and also novel elements brought from outside the country. This new French generation constitutes a rich and unpredictable force, a historical and cultural melting pot of different peoples from different places of origin. Themes of tradition, religious festivals, social status, costume, games and family relations will also be presented in this context.
The project will be supported and enlarged with demonstration of the results by diverse cultural institutions.
Participants in the project so far include the photographers Valerie Belin, Pierre Gonnord, Regina Virserius, Jian Jiang and Malik Nejmi.
