When I finally got a chance to fulfil my desire to visit the village, where my father grew up, and where I had been several times as a child, and I was standing in the centre of the village on a crossroad, I saw motorcycles riding around everywhere and immediately thought: this I have to photograph, the motorcycles with their proud owners. In this way the idea for making this series came up.
Because, when I was a little child I also accompanied my father in the sidecar of his motorcycle, to go for a swim in the river, or to go fishing, or to visit relatives. It gave me a good feeling to return to my childhood.
When you look at a motorcycle you can immediately recognize a lot of details about the owner. Is he a careful driver? Where he went today? What is his occupation?
Each scratch or dent on the motorcycle has off course its own story and the owners are most willing to tell them.
I am grateful for all the villagers that have taken the time to pose for me and allowed me to portray an important part of their lives.
