Ivan Lungin “Exodus”

Exodus is a person, a crowd, a road, appearing in our field of vision and instantly disappearing. A human silhouette in the city is no more than a drop of ink, dissolving in a glass of water. In contrast to the static nature and stability of urban landscapes — recognisable architectural features, facades, corners, turns — in a crowd the human backbone, like the face, is emptiness, an indefinite article. The crowd resembles glimpses of landscape seen through a car window, with the same concentrated, speeded-up translation of archetypes made indistinguishable. The dividing up of this flow provokes the appearance of a subject. Removing the spines, backs of heads and parts of the landscape from their usual context, we give them life, meaning and symbolism, we animate them. The projection of our ‘I’ turns every tiny part in to its reflection. This mirroring is provided by our own experiences, fears, hopes and myths.
