European travels of Pavel Tretyakov

The ‘European Travels of Pavel Tretyakov’ exhibition devised by the State Tretyakov Gallery showcases Pavel Mikhailovich’s journeys across Europe.

This extensive collection of unique photographs from the second half of the 19th to early 20th century is shown for the first time, and gives an idea of the sights seen by Pavel Tretyakov and his family in various European cities. The photographs were taken by the best photographers of that period: the Fratelli Alinari, J. and D. Anderson, E. Behles, G. Brogi, the Gaillot brothers, T. Cuccioni, P. Lombardi, G. Sommer, J.A. Braun, G. Le Gray, J. Hautecoeur, P. Robert, C.A. Blázquez, J. Laurent, and others. Also on display are works by photographers from major publishing houses in Germany, Holland, Spain, Italy, France and Switzerland.

Many of these prints are veritable masterpieces of art photography. They provide visitors to the exhibition with an opportunity to stroll along the streets of European cities and visit famous museums and churches, observing masterpieces of painting and sculpture as they appeared in the second half of the 19th to early 20th century.
